Drivers warning: locally estimated stopping distance

This paper deals with a procedure to estimate the stopping distance on board of vehicle. This procedure is based on a simplified model for emergency ABS braking, including four variables: initial speed, transient time, maximum road/tyre friction and 2 braking system efficiency coefficients. The model has been validated for three vehicles; stopping distance is estimated within an acceptable accuracy on different wearing courses. The main phases of this procedure are the estimation the maximum friction coefficient for the tyres of the vehicle (mu(sub max)) and the ABS efficiency coefficients; this must be done on line during a braking manoeuvre. The possibility to estimate mu(sub max) from road friction devices data is evaluated. For the covering abstract see E134653.
