Stansted battle lines drawn

This article asks the question, which is worst? Are more, quieter aeroplanes less annoying than fewer of a noisier generation? Questions are being asked, relating to the validity of the official noise indicators based on noise contours, using the averaging approach of the LAeq metric. The current Stansted public enquiry is giving noise consultants on both sides of the issue the opportunity to put their cases forward. Various technical arguments are discussed and observations made, for example, Stansted Airport currently handles 23.7 million passengers per annum (mppa) and this is expected to rise to about 25 mppa in 2008. The British Airports Authority (BAA) claims that the noise impact has been properly assessed in accordance with the most recent government policy guidance, including the Air Transport White Paper (ATWP). Reference is also made to the opening of the third runway at Sydney Airport, Australia in 1984 and the following public outcryfrom people who had not expected to be affected by the resultant change in noise levels and their distribution.
