Personal repertoire of travel modes - mover groups in the National Travel Survey

Liikkujaryhmat valtakunnallisessa henkiloliikennetutkimusaineistossa

This research concerns the various ways that people use different travel modes based on the National Travel Survey. Five mover groups were defined from the data based on which travel mode or a combination of travel modes respondents usually used and how committed they were to using it. Regional classification, which is functional and independent of municipal borders and which is based on land use and transport system, was used in studying regional differences. Furthermore, a need- based grouping after human phase of life was utilised in the work. Thus, the aim was to define the mobility needs, possibilities and choices simultaneously through different classifications. Land use in the neighbourhood of residences and available transport system significantly affect the mobility of people in all regions. Good level of service of public transport promotes the use of public transport and versatile services in the neighbourhood of residences increase pedestrian and bicycle traffic. In large cities, regular customers of public transport make over half of all trips and mixed users of all modes make one-fifth of all trips on public transport. In other regions, both groups make almost one-third of all trips each on public transport. Therefore, mixed users of all modes constitute a significant share of all trips in public transport, although depending on the region, they make one-third or a half of their trips by car. When using a regional classification based on municipal borders, essential differences especially in pedestrian and bicycle traffic cannot be observed. Also, the characteristics of sparsely populated areas and city centres remain to be discovered. Every municipality or city region has functionally very different types of areas, when the mean does not necessarily describe any area well. Key figures for administrative regions may give a misleading picture of a phenomenon, which is significantly affected by the functional characteristics of a region.
