Charting the Midwest: An Inventory and Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in America's Heartland
The Midwestern United States is home to about 60 million people, making up about 20% of the population in the United States. The Midwest also produces about 5% of the global greenhouse gases. The Midwest will probably be impacted by global warming, as its average temperature is expected to rise between 2.8 and 5.6 degrees during this century. This will result in a reduction in lake and river levels, geographical changes in rainfall distribution and greater stress on the health of its population. This report analyzes emissions in the Midwest and compares them to international and national emissions totals. It investigates greenhouse gas production by electric power generation, industrial energy utilization, agriculture and transportation. It also analyzes greenhouse gas emissions and related indicators by state.
