ITE Technical Committee TENC-105-01: School Site Planning, Design and Transportation
This article provides a summary of the activities of the Institute of Transportation Engineers Technical Committee TENC-105-01, which was established to identify guidelines or best practices for school site planning, design and transportation facilities. The development of the guidelines currently is underway. Local agencies, school officials and developers can use the planned guidelines to identify and provide safe and highly functional school sites, layout of school campuses and street systems adjacent to schools, and adequate sidewalk/bikeway connections to maximize the ability of students to walk or ride their bikes to school. A major emphasis will be on the site selection and design of new elementary schools for maximum walkability, safety and efficiency. Examples of a good school site/campus layout and a good school retrofit are provided.
