Driving in Older Adults: A Cognitive Perspective

This article presents a review of the literature on the cognitive alterations associated with old age and the cognitive prerequisites of safe driving. The authors note that, when total driving distance is considered, many studies have indicated that older drivers show greater risks of being involved in a road accident. This phenomenon is of tremendous importance, particularly in light of demographic changes that will be resulting in a significant increase in older drivers over the next thirty years. The authors discuss the findings of their literature, considering some of the challenges associated assessing older drivers' driving abilities. Any such assessment must consider both the multi-factorial nature of cognitive aging and the interacting cognitive processes involved in car driving.
