Reclaimed material project: guideline for material reuse

VicRoads has prioritised the maximisation of the level of recycled products used during road maintenance and construction and the minimisation of the level of waste going to landfill. This has resulted in the need for investigation into ways to increase the levels of recycled or reclaimed content used in road construction and to identify opportunities for the use of low level contaminated soil in permanent structures, in ways that will not lead to impacts on human health or the environment. VicRoads’ approach to reducing resource consumption and waste generation is based on the waste hierarchy of "avoid, reuse, recycle, recover, treat, contain and dispose". Recent research undertaken for VicRoads into the Feasibility of Using Reclaimed Materials in Road Construction Activities (GHD, January 2006) identified that there were several materials that while not specifically identified in VicRoads specifications, would potentially meet current specifications. While these materials are potentially suitable for the structural requirements in current VicRoads specifications there may be the need for contamination testing to be carried out to confirm contamination status prior to use.
