Some Empirical Relations Between Travel Speed, Traffic Volume and Traffic Composition in Urban Arterials
This paper examines the relationship between travel speed, traffic volume, and traffic composition in urban signalized arterials. Using a methodology that is based on Bayesian learning and emerging self-organizing structures of neural networks, the study identifies eight specific regions of traffic behavior in the speed-volume relationship on arterials under mixed traffic. In addition, the effect of traffic composition in each of the regions is also separately evaluated, and it is shown that the effect of traffic composition decreases with the onset of congestion. Finally, the study finds that taxis and motorcycles and the primary affecting parameter of the form of the speed-volume relationship in urban arterials.
