APPLICATION OF FOIL AIR BEARING TURBOMACHINERY IN AIRCRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL SYSTEMS

Recent trends in aircraft design emphasize high reliability components with low life-cycle costs. Cooling turbine studies show that bearing failures are by far the most common cause of unit failures. This fact has given emphasis to the development of new, highly reliable bearing systems. One system that is becoming more widely used is the foil air bearing cooling turbine. The design requirements of cooling turbines and some of the problems encountered by earlier ball bearing units are presented here. The design features and advantages of foil air bearing units are also covered. Finally, reliability data are presented showing the service performance of the air bearing cooling turbines.
