Crash Investigation and Human Factors

This paper describes how accident investigations have concentrated on establishing the cause of accidents and preventing their recurrence. Beyond investigating accident causes it has become apparent that the railway industry would benefit if efforts were made to understand the mechanisms and severity of passenger injury and issues relating to egress, passenger perception and other areas of human factors. Recommendations made in relation to the information that should be collected post accident, including the timing and method of collation, have been tested following recent accidents on the United Kingdom (UK) rail network. The use of emerging technologies assists in gathering the required information with minimum disruption to other emergency teams. This allows for the rapid return to service of the railway operation. Subsequent to the gathering of information the analysis of such data can be used to guide research streams. These research streams aid decision-making and allow consideration to be given to vehicle design improvements by building on a holistic understanding of accidents.
