The design of 71 Eastlink bridges

Parsons Brinckerhoff and Hyder Consulting Joint Venture (PBHyder) is the main civil and structural consultant involved in the design of EastLink, which is a AUD $2.5 billion, 45 km tollroad project. Included in our commission is the design of 71 bridge structures for which 90 per cent of the design was achieved in a 12 month period. Value adding was considered in the design process from the outset in order to economise on time and cost for both design and construction. Several key outcomes of this process which proved to be extremely beneficial included maximising and standardising the use of precast concrete elements such as Super-T beams, precast pier segments and crossheads, precast wing walls and fender walls, and high and medium level containment bridge parapet and offstructure barrier units; and use of integral abutments which provides many benefits both in construction and in service. The design process has been aided by maximizing standard software applications. The use of 3D modelling of bridges and development of in-house software applications for structural design ensured there were consistent design solutions. There were many stages in the review and approval process and the standard approach to design expedited the review process. Project control mechanisms were implemented to track this process and to control bridges designed by the project team and sub-consultants.
