Kuranda Range bridges: planning
Some 35 bridges have been proposed on a 14 km long dual road through inaccessible and environmentally sensitive tropical forest of Kuranda Range in Cairns. One third of the route will run on bridges spanning deep gorges, creeks and rivers. The road designers used bridges to pull the road away from the slopes to reduce the volume of earthworks, minimise disruptions to traffic and protect the environment. Terrain and environmental constraints severely limited access to construction sites. Large part of the project is within the World Heritage Boundary of the tropical forest where no land access was allowed. Severe access restrictions resulted in adopting top down construction of foundations and piers resulting in construction sites marginally exceeding foundation footprints. The paper reports on the planning process with special emphasis on unique structures in terms of design concept and constructability aspects.
