Use of soft limestone as an alternative road base material in the Philippines
Soft limestones, locally known as Anapog, are prevalent in many parts of the Philippines where better quality construction materials are scarce. These marginal materials fail to meet the construction specifications for road bases because the gravel and sand size materials in the natural grading are too soft compared with the requirements for aggregates, and the fines in the material are too silty. Laboratory testing indicated that stabilization with the addition of low proportions of cement dramatically improved the strength of the materials. Full scale trials have been constructed in the three main regions of the Philippines; Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, and the performance of these has been monitored for several years. The indications are that the stabilization of soft limestones is a cost effective alternative to importing higher quality materials, leading to significant savings in road construction costs (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
