Taking the sting out of data storage
Drivers require more digital infotainment in their cars and want to personalise their cars with their own multimedia (video, music, online entertainment guides, 3D maps) to make the most of the increasing time they spend in their car. New applications for automotive infotainment include audio systems, navigation systems, rear seat entertainment, advanced applications such as speech recognition, satellite radio, and parametric data systems. These applications are associated with new problems for data storage. The lifecycle requirements of data storage for the automotive industry are long compared with other industries. The problems with traditional data storage products include hard disk drives (HDDs) and CD and DVD-ROMs when used in automotive applications are outlined. The increased use of Flash, a non-volatile memory that stores data reliably in the absence of power is discussed with reference to Nand Flash and embedded flash drives (EFDs). (A)
