Traffic Analysis Zone Formation and Trip Generation Using Fuzzy Cluster Estimation

This paper utilizes an innovative strategy to develop a solution for simultaneous Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ) formation and trip generation problems. Conventional optimization techniques provided for solving of the TAZ formation problem have failed to efficiently produce reasonably ‘good’ results. The proposed method is based on the well-known fuzzy clustering methodology. Two small data sets are used to basically verify the suitability and accuracy of the method in achieving ‘good’ solutions, where variation contained inside the zones is minimal while the variation among the zones is maximum, for the TAZ formation and generation problem. Results obtained from application of the methodology on these test data sets are reported and a discussion on the need for further consideration of this technique in practical settings is provided.
