GUARDS ON TRUCKS TO PREVENT CAR UNDER-RIDE
The problem of passenger cars crashing into the rears of truck trays was defined. Information concerning crash testing of under-ride protection devices was reviewed and the need for the simplest type of under-ride guard established. An experimental program consisting of three passenger car crashes was conducted. It was found that a car colliding at 15 km/h with an unprotected truck tray sustained significant reduction of occupant headspace and that a 25 km/h collision produced a reduction in occupant headspace that might have fatal consequences in real crashes. Finally a demonstration of the effectiveness of a simple light-weight under-ride guard was performed. Conclusions regarding the dangers of low speed collision with unprotected truck trays and the effectiveness of an under-ride guard were drawn. Existing relevant Australian and European legislation was compared and new requirements proposed. /Author/TRRL/
