The Accelerated Polishing of Chipseal Aggregates – A New Laboratory Test Method

The purpose of this paper is to describe a study that attempted to stimulate and simulate the variation of skid resistance that occurs on pavements in the field. The paper discusses the equipment, methodology and the laboratory procedure developed for testing and gives example results carried out on a basalt aggregate commonly used in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. The research took place at the University of Auckland and the laboratory based method used large (approx 300mm diameter) chipseal surfacing samples. This research was conducted as part of a Land Transport New Zealand (formerly Transfund NZ) Research Project in 2004/5.
