Body of evidence
This article describes some of the products available for the enforcement of red traffic signal legislation. Systems use film, digital photographs or video to record images. Transportable systems provide flexibility and are less noticeable. Digital cameras eliminate the time and cost of film processing and the images can be transmitted over wireline and wireless networks. Systems available include capture of multiple images for evidence purposes, road-embedded and inductive loop sensors, laser-based units and sensors attached to the traffic lights. In some cases image capture can interface with motor vehicle departments to identify and track vehicle owners. Video cameras and processing can be used to forecast likely violations and hold all traffic at red, reducing the chance of an accident. Variable message signs can be attached to a detection system to display the vehicle number with a cautionary message.
