Using the Safe System Approach to Keep Older Drivers Safely Mobile

This article discusses an Australian road safety system, as derived from similar systems in Sweden and the Netherlands, which analyzes roadway factors such as infrastructure, speed, and users in order to help to mitigate crashing and crash severity. The problems posed by certain factors related to older drivers are discussed in particular, such as fitness to drive, atypical driving patterns, and their greater physical frailty. The article presents four areas of improvement from the Australian program: design improvements for urban intersections, improved crashworthiness of vehicles, speed modifications, and improving the safety of road users themselves through better assessment procedures as well as better education for those drivers who require it. Education can take the form of health assessments, information regarding a person's crash risk, and driving adjustments.
