UK-Tram: the answer to light rail's growing pains?

UK-Tram is a new company formed to improve the relationship between the tram industry and the Government. The idea for UK-Tram arose from a growing perception that street-running tram systems were getting too expensive and that the method of planning and development was not delivering schemes that offered the best transport benefits. In 2004, the National Audit Office identified reasons why the UK's tramways were getting more expensive. These included the allocation of risks between the parties involved in developing a tramway and the appropriateness of traditional procurement methods for constructing a public transport facility. UK-Tram consists of four industry partners: the Confederation of Passenger Transport, the Passenger Transport Executive Group, Light Rapid Transit Forum and Transport for London. Four main areas of work have been identified: standards, peer review, legal and safety issues, and procurement and funding. Ten priority activities are listed.
