Parking and tourism

The day-trip market is a significant component of tourism in the UK. A survey in 2002-2003 found that town/city visits accounted for 71% of day trips, with 73% of all tourism day trips made by car. The average round trip was 35 miles and the average stay was 3.5 hours. The provision of car parking for day-trip visitors is important. Parking, congestion and environment intrusion were the key issues identified in a strategic review of Durham's transport needs by Colin Buchanan in the 1990s. The proposed recommendations were implemented by the County Council. These included the introduction of the UK's first congestion charge controlling access to the central historic site, the relocation of the coach park, the introduction of a special 'Cathedral Bus', implementation of a series of controlled parking zones, and construction of three park and ride sites. Colin Buchanan also worked on a parking scheme for Stonehenge, relocating the existing parking area to a new visitor centre linked by land train to the stones.
