Creating a sustainable central business district that works

The modern urban Central Business District (CBD) is the transport hub of our community. Over recent years many CBDs throughout the country have been enhanced, given a face lift and now look pretty, but very few have tackled the issue of a sustainable transport system to maintain their vitality. This paper will present the Nelson experience of how Nelson has successfully created a pedestrian dominated CBD area and has achieved the highest pedestrian and cycling commuter numbers in the entire country. The Nelson CBD is one of four national pilot Safer Routes studies being funded by the Land Transport Safety Authority (LTSA). This paper will report on this study. This Safer Routes study looks at pedestrian and cyclist safety within the CBD urban environment. Nelson is not without its transport problems but is striving towards a sustainable CBD that works. This paper will share the Nelson experience and pose some questions on where to in the future. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E212706.
