Research Concerning Standardization of DSRC-Based Services

Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) is engaged in research concerning the development of standards necessary for the popularization of various types of ITS services that use 5.8 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC). This research is being done as part of the ITS Standardization Project commissioned to JARI by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Two major areas are being examined—standardization concerning DSRC-based electronic payment and standardization of DSCR in-vehicle devices. The results of the former work are essential to the deployment of electronic payment services based on the use of smart credit cards incorporating an IC chip. The results of the latter work are related to the basic application interface needed to apply DSRC to various user services and to the security model for assuring secure communications. Using the results obtained in this work, the DSRC Forum Japan is preparing draft standards and is also promoting stronger cooperation among the parties involved with the aim of achieving the early deployment of various types of DSRC-based services.
