PORTAL: Implementing a New Generation Archived Data User Service in Portland, Oregon
Transportation system performance measurement is a key issue for transportation planning and operations, but until recently it has been difficult to incorporate real time intelligent transportation (ITS) data due to complexities in data formats and storage. To overcome this, the Portland Oregon Regional Transportation Archive Listing (PORTAL) has been developed by Portland State University in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and other regional transportation agency partners. Beginning in July 2004, PORTAL has been receiving a live data stream consisting of 20-second data from the 485 inductive loop detectors comprising the Portland area’s Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). PORTAL is designated as the Portland region’s official data archiving entity, and is being expanded to include automated reports of key transportation system performance measures. The objective of this paper is to describe the implementation and status of PORTAL, including a discussion of the hardware and software implementation used in building this system. Also, an update to our future design plans will be included. Along with the implementation details the reader will be given a short tour of the user interface. Several of the above points are complemented with comparisons of other systems that are being implemented elsewhere.
