Ground penetrating radar for monitoring of English roads
The Highways Agency is increasingly deploying Ground Penetrating Radar to monitor road construction and sub-surface defects on the English motorway and all purpose trunk road network because the tool is non destructive and capable of operating at normal traffic speeds. This paper reviews the development of GPR as a road surveying tool in England and includes research undertaken by TRL, on behalf of the HA, to monitor and validate this process and to provide advice to HA Agent Authorities on the commissioning of GPR surveys. During this research new road applications for the tool were identified and some of these are now being developed. The paper concludes with suggestions for future work to improve the performance of GPR in monitoring roads at normal traffic speed. (A)
