Solutions to bridges of size
Sistema SteelGard barriers were used in a project to install 750m of new parapet over bridges on the M4/M5 Almondsbury intersection near Bristol, UK. The lightweight Sistema parapets snapped into place simply and quickly over the old obsolete 1970s barriers. The lightweight design meant that the barriers did not impose a high loading on the bridges. The barriers also had a high containment value in the event of impact. SteelGard has also been installed on the M1, M25 and A1(M). Foster Yeoman Contracting (FYC) has launched a Specialist Concrete Division to work on crash barriers on bridges over railway lines. Projects include the A21 Hildenborough Railway Bridge at Sevenoaks, the M2 Clockhouse Railway Bridge at Faversham, the M20 Chrismill Railway Bridge at Maidstone and the A249 Queensborough Railway Bridge near Sheerness. Work on the four projects was conducted under the Highways Agency MAC contracts Area 3. The safety improvements involved removing the old crash barriers and replacing them with a rectangular tubular steel barrier on a concrete bed.
