The use of carbon fibre to strengthen railway structures - case studies
The use of carbon fibre composites for infrastructure rehabilitation has been investigated in a number of projects since 1994. These projects form the basis for design guidance notes that can be used by the civil engineering industry in general to produce infrastructure rehabilitation schemes. The use of the methodologies that are contained in the guidance notes has been illustrated in two railway strengthening projects - London Underground's Covered Ways 12 and 58, where carbon fibre strengthening was carried out in May and June 1999, and London Underground Vent Shaft V129, where carbon fibre strengthening was carried out between July and September 1999. In both cases, the service remained operational during strengthening works. In both of these very different projects, the carbon fibre strengthening scheme was installed on programme and to budget, demonstrating that the right preparation can allow the successful introduction of new technology, even in one of the most difficult railway environments in terms of access and time constraints.
