DIDACTU, an e-learning tool for underground works

Since several years an e-learning tool is developed by CETU and UCL, for continued teaching through the net with ability of calculus for pre-design and parametric study. The aim of this tool is continued teaching, that is to say, that we don't deal with elementary theories, such are continuum mechanics or soil mechanics, but we suppose a sufficient background for the reader, and so we can speak really of underground works. The typical user would be a student at a master level or an engineer discovering the underground works. With this concept, the main difficulty is the numerical illustration of methods for the immediate identification by the reader of the main parameter among all parameters used by the method. On line codes mostly facilitate the understanding of course writings as they can illustrate easily the concept developed. The most important parts are: (a) Design, witch gives all the approaches that we can use either in soil or in rock. (b) Description of all the works, with numerous pictures describing machines. The first approach of this e-learning system is like a book, one can follow it page after page. The second approach is trough a project, questions becoming more and more accurate as the user defines the project. The description of this approach will be developed, as it can be useful for navigation in sites with large amount of pages. For this, an ontology of the world of tunnel must be developed, on this way we meet knowledge management theories. Except heavy calculus, all kind of calculus can be done with easy to use interfaces, from empirical approach to FEM supporting pre-defined shapes of tunnel. After the description of this tool some technical aspects are approached. This paper explains the strategy for on line codes, and the links to a data-base of cases for illustrating the topic one is dealing with. These cases will be automatically referenced using the words of ontology. On going developments of this tool called DIDACTU, will be proposed next year for a better and a more complete e-learning system. DIDACTU still under development is already reachable at http://www.solem.ch and http://lita.gce.ucl.ac.be/~kbt. The TC 18 (learning) of ITA follows this development. (A).
