City and Country of San Francisco’s SFgo Program: Systems Engineering Applied for ITS

This paper presents a brief overview of Systems Engineering concepts followed by discussion of each step of the process through the experience of the SFgo Initial Phase. This paper presents the overall planning, design and implementation process for San Franciscos ITS Program, highlighting the specific utilization of the Systems Engineering approach for this complex system. The focus will be on the elements that form the Central System and all of the related hardware and firmware components, including the deep challenges of balancing user needs, technological and cost constraints, and the procurement process. It discusses the effective use of sound Systems Engineering including the development of a Concept of Operations, High Level and Detailed System Functional Requirements, the detailed Component Level Design and the Integration, Implementation and Validation requirements. The SFgo programs lessons learned are also presented.
