AMERICA'S NATIONAL PARK ROADS AND PARKWAYS: DRAWINGS FROM THE HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERING RECORD
This book is a direct result of the growing appreciation for the historic stature and cultural significance of America's park roads and parkways. The first part of the book presents drawings which show how park roads were built, trace their evolution over time, and delineate the design techniques that allow park roads to provide safe and stimulating access to a wide range of natural and cultural features without unduly affecting the landscapes through which they pass. While not every national park could be included in this survey, the examples that are included provide a representative sample of the richness and diversity of America's park road landscapes while articulating the complex social, technological, aesthetic, and environmental forces that have made them cherished components of America's cultural heritage. The following are included: Acadia National Park Roads and Bridges; Crater Lake National Park Road System, 1919/1933; Going-to-the-Sun Road, Glacier National Park, I and II; Great Smoky Mountains National Park Roads and Bridges; Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park Carriage Roads; Mount Rainier National Park Roads and Bridges; Rocky Mountain National Park Roads; Scotts Bluff National Monument Summit Road; Sequoia National Park, Generals Highway; Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Drive; Yellowstone Roads and Bridges, I and II; Yosemite National Park Roads and Bridges, I and II; and Zion National Park Roads and Bridges. The second part of the book is devoted to the National Park Service's parkways which epitomize the harmonious integration of highway engineering and landscape design. The examples included are Baltimore-Washington Parkway, Blue Ridge Parkway, Colonial Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Natchez Trace Parkway, and Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway.
