ASSESSMENT OF THE PULSE CREEP TEST TO PREDICT ASPHALT MIXTURE RUTTING BEHAVIOUR

Over the years, much research has been carried out by BP and others to be able to predict the rutting performance of asphalt mixtures from a binder property alone. Opinions as to which binder property best predicts rutting resistance differ and vary from long loading time to short loading times. In such cases, correlations have been reported but the problem is that the predictions are not robust enough for performance prediction. Doubt has been cast on the rutting parameter (G*/sin delta) and alternative proposed methods are being developed. This paper describes a pulse creep test, using a DSR, and compares data obtained from this test with previously reported rutting data. The pulse creep results showed a good correlation with asphalt rutting performance but its predictive capability was no better than other correlations obtained in earlier studies.
