HOW THE PROPERTY AND PERFORMANCE OF POLYMER MODIFIED BITUMEN SHOULD BE EVALUATED IN POROUS ASPHALT MIX?

Due to its high porosity, durability of porous asphalt greatly depends on the property of bitumen. On the current Japanese specification, mostly the same testing method has been just applied correspondingly from straight run bitumen and conventional modified bitumen to the special polymer modified bitumen, which is developed for porous asphalt used in Japan. However, due to the total difference of its microstructure of each bitumen caused by the amount of difference of the SBS polymer, conventional testing methods cannot evaluate property of this special binder properly so far. This study results succesfully establish a Binder Bending Test at very low temperature, as an appropriate testing method to evaluate both the property of SBS binder and the relationship with the durability of porous asphalt mix.
