THE EFFECT OF MIXING TIME ON THE VISCOSITY OF CRM BINDERS

In the last decade, considerable research has been done on the properties of crumb rubber modified asphalt. Some researchers have focused on the environmental aspect of growing stockpiles of waste tires, and some sought to improve the properties of asphalt cements, i.e., low temperature or moisture susceptibility. This paper focuses on some of the discrepancies in the published research, particularly the effect of preparation and mixing time on viscosity, the most basic property of CRM from the technological standpoint. Discrepancies were found on the effects of temperature, duration of mixing (interaction), source of bitumen, size, and gradation of crumb rubber on the viscosity of CRM. To clarify these discrepancies, laboratory tests were conducted on 60/70 penetration grade asphalt cement and 200/300 penetration vacuum bottom from Tabriz and Esfahan refinery, and fine and coarse crumb rubber produced at Yazd Tire in Iran. Viscosity tests using a Brookfield viscometer were conducted at different temperatures. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480.
