AN AIRFIELD PERFORMANCE BASED OVERLAY CONTRACT (CASEMENT AERODROME, BALDONNELL, CO. DUBLIN)

Material design was one of the many challenging aspects of the contract at Baldonnell airfield, located in West County Dublin. The materials which comprised of a Crack Relief layer and a surface course of a Polymer modified asphalt (PMA) were both new to the contractor and encompassed many performance requirements in accordance with both ASTM, and CEN standards. The materials were new to the industry in Ireland and as a result experience was limited. This paper is primarily concerned with the design of the PMA which was carried out in two stages. Stage 1 - Volumetric Mix design which involved the determination of the optimum binder content using the more traditional Marshall criteria. Stage 2 - Mix performance design which involved the determination of several performance characteristics of the mix at the optimum binder content, one point below and two points above. Such criteria included Indirect Tensile Strength, Resilient Modulus and Dynamic creep testing. In order to illustrate the advantage of using a polymer-modified binder, some of the performance testing was repeated using a penetration grade bitumen. The paper presents and discusses the results for this contract whilst also outlining differences in performance with the use of a penetration grade bitumen.
