This document contains an oral history interview with Heinz Heckeroth. It gives an historical overview of the development of the highway system in California and the state's Department of Transportation. Upon his retirement in 1988 as Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Heckeroth had served the state for 32 years, playing an active role in the development of California's freeway system.
