GUIDELINES FOR USING SIMULATION MODELS FOR PUBLIC MEETINGS

This paper outlines the author's experience in preparing traffic microscopic simulation models and three-dimensional videos for use in public meetings. These models provide very detailed analysis and graphics of traffic operations for design projects. The paper presents several examples of the use of these models and videos to help educate the public on the purpose and features of design projects. The primary focus of these presentations was to create models of the proposed projects that accurately depicted the design and traffic operations. The secondary focus was to create quality animation of the designs for public relation purposes. There are many benefits to using these videos to help explain the proposed design and traffic operations of projects to the public. We outline the benefits we found as we prepared and presented the videos. We also recorded some concerns the public experienced as they viewed the videos and offer some solutions to help avoid these problems. These guidelines will help traffic professionals prepare quality simulation models and videos that will improve the public's understanding of projects.
