WESTERNISING TRAVEL POLICY: RICKSHAW PULLERS IN CALCUTTA. IN: DELIVERING SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT. A SOCIAL SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE

The chapter identifies Calcutta as encapsulating the essence of the 'mega-city' transport problem in developing countries. Urban transport planning and urban governance have failed in a dramatic way in the city. The failures are compounded by the import of transport strategies from the developed world that are totally inappropriate in Calcutta. The aim of this paper is to redefine the role of rickshaw within a 21st century vision of well managed cities, urban sustainability and a societal framweork that rewards its citizens with clean air, low noise, high accessibility, and safety and security. The meaning and significance of sustainable transport are explored through a detailed evaluation of the rickshaw in Calcutta.
