ENVIRONMENTAL MODELLING - WAYS OF ESTIMATING FUEL CONSUMPTION, EMISSIONS AND NOISE

This paper describes the CONTRAM model for dynamic modelling of traffic emissions, and new research projects to improve emission modelling. CONTRAM (CONtinuous TRaffic Assignment Model) simulates time-varying traffic in a consistent and realistic manner to produce a pattern of location-specific emissions. Further enhancements may be possible in the future. New research to improve emission modelling includes the TRAMAQ (TRAffic Management and Air Quality) project to provide local authorities with tools to assess the effects of traffic management on vehicle emissions and air quality. Fifteen research topics were identified, four of which related to the development of emission models: these are described. Once emission models are established and calibrated they can be applied using a dynamic traffic assignment model such as CONTRAM. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116350.
