DEVELOPMENT STATUS OF KOREA ACCELERATED LOADING AND ENVIRONMENTAL SIMULATOR (KALES)

Since the 88 Expressway, the first concrete pavement in Korea, was opened to traffic in 1983, most recent expressways have been constructed using concrete pavements. As the age of a concrete pavement approaches to its service life, rehabilitation costs tend to rapidly increase every year. Thus rehabilitation methods and materials needed to be continuously improved and developed economically. To meet these objectives, accelerated pavement testing systems have been developed in foreign countries. Unfortunately most of these APT systems have their own patents and were mainly made to evaluate asphalt concrete pavements. To meet the society's demand of having our own APT system which can examine the long-term performance of concrete pavements, a study to develop the Korea Accelerated Pavement Loading and Environmental Simulator (KALES) for concrete pavements has been performed for the three years from 1997 through to 1999. Based on this preliminary study, detailed design of the full-scale KALES has been confirmed by the manufactured small scale model.
