WEIGHT OF NUMBERS

Commercial vehicle overloading damages the road surface. Virtual Weigh in Motion (WIM) is a technology developed by the Indiana Department of Transportation, the Indiana State Police and Mettler Toledo in the USA. Traditional methods of monitoring vehicle weight use weight stations or portable scales. Virtual WIM allow the Indiana State Police to be unpredictable. The system records data 24 hours a day that can be used in two ways. Troopers can monitor specific sensor sites and capture violators as the violations occur. Secondly, the data can be analysed historically to determine places and times where overweight vehicles are prevalent. The system was first used in State Route 1 between I-74 and I-275, which is used by trucks to bypass the State of Indiana and Ohio weighing stations.
