OPTICAL FIBRE INTELLIGENT LINEAR HEAT DETECTION FOR ROAD AND RAIL TUNNELS
Since the introduction of the first commercially available optical fibre Distributed Temperature Sensing system (DTS) in 1986, the technology has been successfully applied in a number of safety critical areas. These range from monitoring the temperature profile of high voltage power cables and the detection and location of hot spots on process plant to detection of leaks in cryogenic gas storage tanks and obtaining temperature profiles along oil production wells. DTS is being used to provide solutions to an increasing number of temperature measurement problems and fire detection, particularly in tunnels, is one such application. This paper describes the technology and its advantages as an intelligent linear heat detection system for road and rail tunnels. Reference is made, using a case study, of how the technology is now being integrated into a tunnel management system. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114957.
