SAFETY ASPECTS AND TUNNEL CONFIGURATION

The increasing number of longer tunnels, the increasing length, higher traffic volumes and higher speeds inevitably lead to an increase in the number of incidents. The worst case scenario is if fire breaks out. From recent incidents and from test results, we know that response time is critical, and that self rescue is probably the only way for people to escape safely. Therefore a project configuration from the design engineer in the first place is necessary to achieve this end. This paper deals with the identification of the most feasible and suitable tunnel configurations taking into consideration all aspects of construction and constructability, operation and maintenance, safety and environment, and the costs.
