DESIGNING A CLIMATE-FRIENDLY ENERGY POLICY: OPTIONS FOR THE NEAR TERM

This paper discusses energy policy options for the United States, in order to enable the nation to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in a more effective way. Most of the greenhouse gases emitted take the form of carbon dioxide, which is the result of fossil fuel combustion. The paper touches on the following topics, as listed in the table of contents: I. Energy Policy Context - the link between climate and energy, energy policy history, today's energy policy; II. The current energy picture - fuel mix, domestic fuel production, end uses of energy, and conversion, transmission and end-use efficiency; III. Current greenhouse gas emissions picture; IV. Economic analysis of energy policy; V. Energy policy choices - fossil fuel supply, electricity production, buildings, industrial processes, transportation.
