INTRODUCING ITS ON 2ND KEIHAN EXPRESSWAY: A STUDY
The construction of the expressway between Kyoto and Osaka, Japan is outlined. It is intended to rejuvenate the economy of the area and provide infrastructure for the region that has been rapidly urbanised. The forecast traffic volume in 2010 is 60-80 thousand vehicles per day. The introduction of an ITS system for the new expressway is described. This will contain driver information, passenger information, incident detection, electronic toll collection and highway management software. A park and ride scheme using buses and an electric vehicle hire scheme are also planned. The requirements for the system and its administration are outlined.
