ELITE GOES LIVE IN LEEDS
Elite (the East Leeds Quality Bus Initiative) was launched on November 6th 2001 to improve travel into and out of the city centre from the east. The project brought together Leeds City Council, Metro, FirstGroup and Arriva. The project is based on the use of guided busways and prioritised bus lanes, bus controlled priority at junctions and operation of traffic signals. New bus shelters have been provided and passenger information improved. The guided bus lanes run down the centre of dual carriageways, previously used for trams. The buses are fitted with special equipment for the guided busways. Both FirstGroup Leeds and Arriva Yorkshire use Volvo Alexander low-floor wheelchair accessible double deckers on the route.
