LOTHIAN GOES SMART
The introduction of Smart cards by Lothian Buses in Edinburgh, Scotland is described. Lothian staff were used as guinea pigs to test the system. The Smart cards are produced at either of the two Lothian Travelshops in Edinburgh and include details and a photograph of the customer and travel details. Once on a bus, the card is fed into a reader and a green light tells the driver that it is a valid card. The card gives a warning signal on the last date at which it is valid. The card can be hotlisted if it has been lost or stolen. The company's agents will be equipped with machines to update the cards. Future developments may include a purse card, selected usage card, pre-payment for other services, pre-booked cards, tourist cards and Festival cards.
