GRAPHS SIMPLIFY FAN CALCULATIONS

In any type of ventilation system, supply or exhaust, the designer sizes the system components to achieve a predetermined air distribution. There are no reliable self-balancing systems, so that testing, balancing, and adjusting have to be carried out before the design objectives can be met. No universal procedure for testing has yet been established nor is there any agreement on the best method of balancing, so that the field technician and engineer has to rely solely on the fan laws. Equations for the fan laws are found in many books and manuals, but they are often awkward to use or graphically unmanageable in field practice. Charts are presented that have been designed to enable the technician and engineer to solve fan problems quickly and accurately without having to use a slide rule or calculator. Although the charts shown are for the laws most commonly used in field work, they may also be used for design purposes.
