RADAR ASSESSMENT OF POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE

Subsurface radar has become an established investigative tool for assessment of concrete structures. It has proved useful for locating metal post-tensioning ducts in prestressed concrete but is unable to detect grouting deficiencies within these ducts. The use of non-metallic ducts has been suggested for new construction which might facilitate insitu condition monitoring, and a preliminary programme of work has been undertaken to assess the capabilities of radar when plastic ducts are used. The study comprises laboratory tests using commercially available field testing equipment undertaken in a simulation tank and on concrete specimens, supported by finite element and finite difference computer models. Prospects for field applications of radar to inspection of post-tensioned bridges are considered in the light of the results obtained. For the covering abstract see ITRD E111699.
