FIELD TESTING OF 18M POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE BEAMS STRENGTHENED WITH CFRP PLATES

ROBUST, a project to investigate the strengthening of reinforced or prestressed concrete bridges using pultruded or pre-preg carbon and glass fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP and GFRP) materials as an alternative to steel plate bonding in the UK is described. Tests conducted using 18.0 m post-tensioned prestressed concrete beams taken from the A34 Botley flyover showed that prestressing the composite plates before bonding is viable. Three other sets of tests were also undertaken. Practical aspects of the testing are discussed with a view to developing practical design rules and guidelines.
