ADVANCED TRAVEL ACCESSIBILITY SYSTEMS (ATAS): A FRAMEWORK AND LINKAGES TO THE MARKETPLACE

The increased activity in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) - Advanced Transport Telematics Systems (ATTS) and Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS) - could be a mixed blessing for elderly and disabled travellers. ITS advancements could facilitate travel for all, including those with special needs. Although some automated travel aids and on-board devices might increase the complexity of certain tasks, making them a burden, possibly even a safety hazard. The Advanced Travel Accessibility System (ATAS), a conceptual framework incorporating the needs of elderly and disabled travellers into the ITS scheme, was developed by Canadian researchers to bring this issue into focus. This paper describes the conceptual framework and activities under the ATAS umbrella, including market opportunities and consumer perspectives.
